Fightstar have said the reason for releasing their forthcoming album Be Human on their own label is because they want to take control of their own destiny. The recording, production, mixing and mastering of their third record has been paid for in its entirety by the band.
"Last summer we did a run of small festival tours that funded the record," says guitarist Al Westaway. "We spent all summer basically earning the money to pay for the album. We probably spent between half and a third as much on this album as we did on the last one and it sounds about three times as good in our opinion."
"We had to scrimp for a year but it's put us in a position that's better than virtually every other band out there," adds singer Charlie Simpson, who says his experiences of major labels have helped prompt the band to go their own way.
"What could a major label offer us that we can't offer ourselves?" says the singer.
"If the album does well, we would be stupid to sign up with them. If it doesn't then, as long as we recoup our money, then we haven't lost anything. The music industry has been laid bare to me over the last few years and it can be a pretty horrible place. The way everything works, how corporate it is, couldn't be further away from what i grew up thinking it was. A lot of it is just fickle bullshit. It's horrible. I see it on a day-to-day basis and i think to myself, 'I don't really want to be a part of that'.
"As long as you're controlling your own destiny, you've only got yourself to blame if something goes wrong," he adds. I feel that, even if it doesn't connect or people don't like it, then we did an absolutely great job with this record. It's absolutely everything i wanted it to be."
